Competitor landing-page monitoring without alert noise
- Start with one question and a small set of offer, pricing, proof and CTA pages.
- Exclude clocks, rotating stock, session elements and other known dynamic regions before comparing text.
- Review materiality against the client's test backlog or the brand's commercial calendar.
- Deliver a short evidence brief; keep raw diffs available for audit rather than forwarding them as strategy.
A bounded watchlist example
Synthetic teaching example, not a client result. Decision question: should an agency address annual commitment in its next test hypothesis? The watchlist contains only three public pages from one competitor: pricing, offer landing page and billing FAQ. Each has a pre-agreed URL, allowed page areas, owner and materiality threshold.
- Accept: annual saving changed from 15% to 25% and the CTA from “Start trial” to “Book a demo”. Preserve before/after and send it to review.
- Reject as noise: a countdown, rotating testimonial, visitor count, personalised banner or cookie-banner change. These do not evidence an offer change.
Review before delivery
The reviewer checks the public URL and observation time, reads the preserved before/after evidence, and writes a fact without inferring intent. Only then can they label a hypothesis: annual commitment may receive more emphasis. The strategist receives a question, not an instruction to copy.
When “no action” is the correct outcome
If only layout moved, first check whether it affects the agreed question or the path to the CTA. Record “no action” and the reason only when there is no relevant change. Do not create a test just because the detector found a difference.
Source admissibility and limits
Include only pre-approved publicly accessible URLs. A login, CAPTCHA, private account, individualised content or changed access terms means stop and reassess the source. A public display does not prove intent, margin, traffic or business impact.

Next step
Choose one decision, one owner and the sources that could inform it. If the team cannot verify every alert, assess whether a managed pilot fits.
